About the Artist
Fergus O'Ryan (1911-1989) was a major Irish
artist of the 20th century. Born in
Limerick
in 1911, he studied under Richard
Butcher at
the
Limerick School of Art and also attended the
Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. He first
exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy of
Ireland in 1938 and afterward exhibited
there nearly
every

until
1984. In 1952 he supplied the illustrations
for Patricia Lynch’s Tales of Enchantment, and in
1953 he designed a stamp to mark An Tostal.
In 1956 he won the President Hyde Gold Medal
Award at the Oireachtas exhibition. In 1959
he was appointed an associate of the Royal
Hibernian Academy, and became a full member
in 1960.
